Travel
Salmon is located a scenic two and a half hour drive from Missoula, Montana or three and a half hours from Pocatello, Idaho.
- From Missoula, take US 93 south 140 miles to Salmon.
- From Pocatello, travel north on Interstate 15, 73 miles to exit 143. Turn left on ID 28/ID 33 towards Mud Lake. Travel 15 miles and turn right on ID 28. Travel north 120 miles to Salmon.
Simple but beautiful enough to have both drives listed as scenic by-ways. The Pocatello route travels through Birch Creek valley, famous for its blue-ribbon trout fishing and framed by the Lemhi and Beaverhead Mountains.
From Missoula, the road follows the lovely Bitterroot valley with inspiring glimpses into the Selway Wilderness area.
If you are more cost-conscious and have the time, Salt Lake City and its major airport is just two and a half hours south of Pocatello on Interstate 15, making the total drive to Salmon in six hours.
Other airports with corresponding beautiful drives include Boise, Idaho or Butte, Montana.
